My moving experience with Dumbo Moving was disgraceful, and I would strongly discourage anyone from using them. Dumbo exhibited poor levels of communication and customer service from start to finish. In the early stages, my primary contact was unavailable most times I tried reaching out via phone or email. Upon moving out, the head mover was rude and uncommunicative. When reaching my new destination, the movers were 4 hours late from the time they originally communicated and there was a significant amount of damage done to 10+ of my items during the move, including expensive furniture. The insurance policy was not clearly explained -- during my initial phone call they confirmed that my items would be insured should any damage be Dumbo's fault, however it turns out the fine print is that they only reimburse for a small fraction of the damage (a few cents per pound). As a result, I received under 10% of the total value of estimated damage done to my possessions to which Dumbo was entirely to blame. When I tried to discuss with them they said that the agreements I signed specified this. The documents in question were signed day-off on a tiny device (like mail delivery people use to sign) so it was impossible to see this fine print.
My overall experience is a reflection of a poorly run organization that is dishonest and unconcerned for its customers. Look elsewhere.
While the booking process was very smooth, the estimate I was given was just a starting number. They told me they had to add a flight of stairs to the estimate, since the building ground floor is elevated. Random but fair I guess. The 40% increase in price came when they couldn’t park near my building but instead had to park a little further away, which to them justified increasing the quote from 340 to 640. The movers told me that I could either call the company and get a higher quote AND have to give them a much higher tip or just give the movers cash on the spot to make it all go away. Notice that by then we’re in front of my building and I’m at their mercy if I want to move that day. I called the company and eventually agreed for an increase of “only” $200. The movers on top of that were simply obsessed with their tip. Kept asking about them. Pointing out it should be 20% of the (now increased) price. Insisting they should be in cash.
I felt like I was a hostage. By the end I simply paid them to make it all go away.
You have better moving options than hiring this company. Do so.
Do NOT use Dumbo!
WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! We were paying by the hour and the movers deliberately took advantage and were extremely inefficient. They wasted so much time- it was so painful to watch. They didn't use a dolly and literally moved one box at a time down the hallway to the elevator. My husband and I did a ton of the moving ourselves just to keep things going- it was an exhausting day and what should have taken 3 hours (and it really could have!) ended up taking 7. What should have been a 3 hour drive to our new home took 1.5 hours because the truck driver didn't know that he couldn't go a certain route, then he realized too late that he couldn't fit under an overpass and had to backtrack. When we got there, the couch did not fit through the door initially and the two movers just stood around scratching their heads for too long (like 20 minutes, not even trying other options) until I directed them as to how to maneuver (not that complicated and I'm not the professional! The company sent me a link to pay the additional fee and the movers wouldn't open the truck at our new place until I had paid it- I felt very pressured into paying it. Then I got another link to pay an additional $100, which I didn't pay immediately. When I called two days later to contest this, Alex, the person I spoke to, was extremely difficult about it and told me to take it up with my bank.
